Desert Locust (Schistocerca gregaria)
Large, protein-rich feeder insect available in a wide range of sizes from tiny hoppers to full-grown adults, making it easy to match to colony size. Strong hind legs allow them to jump powerfully, so keeping them contained before feeding is recommended. Best offered freshly killed, as the tough exoskeleton and jumping ability can make live adults difficult prey.
Feeding & Suitability Guide
Why ants need protein: Essential for larval growth, pupation, and egg production by the queen. Adult workers consume very little protein themselves; they carry it to the larvae.
Preparation & Safety: Pre-freeze feeder insects for at least 24–48 hours at -18°C or dip them in boiling water for 10–15 seconds to eliminate harmful mites and pathogens. Cut insects in half for young colonies to facilitate access.
Portioning & Hygiene: Remove uneaten insect parts within 24–48 hours to prevent mold and bacteria in the arena or nest chambers.
