Two-Spotted Cricket (Gryllus bimaculatus)

Also known as the Mediterranean field cricket. Large, robust cricket species commonly used as feeder insect, similar in size to Gryllus assimilis. Widely available and easy to breed, though its size makes it best suited for medium to large ant species; pre-crushing or cutting is recommended for smaller colonies.

Feeding & Suitability Guide

Why ants need protein: Essential for larval growth, pupation, and egg production by the queen. Adult workers consume very little protein themselves; they carry it to the larvae.

Preparation & Safety: Pre-freeze feeder insects for at least 24–48 hours at -18°C or dip them in boiling water for 10–15 seconds to eliminate harmful mites and pathogens. Cut insects in half for young colonies to facilitate access.

Portioning & Hygiene: Remove uneaten insect parts within 24–48 hours to prevent mold and bacteria in the arena or nest chambers.
