Madagascar Hissing Cockroach (Gromphadorhina portentosa)
Large feeder roach with a notably thicker exoskeleton than Argentine wood roaches, so cutting it open before feeding is essential. Due to their considerable size, best suited for large colonies with a high protein demand. Nymphs can be used for smaller colonies, though cutting is still recommended.
Feeding & Suitability Guide
Why ants need protein: Essential for larval growth, pupation, and egg production by the queen. Adult workers consume very little protein themselves; they carry it to the larvae.
Preparation & Safety: Pre-freeze feeder insects for at least 24–48 hours at -18°C or dip them in boiling water for 10–15 seconds to eliminate harmful mites and pathogens. Cut insects in half for young colonies to facilitate access.
Portioning & Hygiene: Remove uneaten insect parts within 24–48 hours to prevent mold and bacteria in the arena or nest chambers.
