Argentine Wood Roach (Blaptica dubia)
Popular and easy-to-breed feeder roach with a soft body and no climbing ability, making it hard for it to escape smooth-walled containers. Available in a wide range of sizes across its life stages, making it suitable for many ant species. Has a fairly hard exoskeleton, so cutting it open is recommended when feeding smaller colonies.
Feeding & Suitability Guide
Why ants need protein: Essential for larval growth, pupation, and egg production by the queen. Adult workers consume very little protein themselves; they carry it to the larvae.
Preparation & Safety: Pre-freeze feeder insects for at least 24–48 hours at -18°C or dip them in boiling water for 10–15 seconds to eliminate harmful mites and pathogens. Cut insects in half for young colonies to facilitate access.
Portioning & Hygiene: Remove uneaten insect parts within 24–48 hours to prevent mold and bacteria in the arena or nest chambers.
