Silent Field Cricket (Gryllus assimilis)

Also known as the Jamaican field cricket. Larger and more robust than house crickets, making it well suited as prey for bigger ant species. Much quieter than other cricket species, which makes it a more pleasant choice for keeping as feeder stock at home.

Feeding & Suitability Guide

Why ants need protein: Essential for larval growth, pupation, and egg production by the queen. Adult workers consume very little protein themselves; they carry it to the larvae.

Preparation & Safety: Pre-freeze feeder insects for at least 24–48 hours at -18°C or dip them in boiling water for 10–15 seconds to eliminate harmful mites and pathogens. Cut insects in half for young colonies to facilitate access.

Portioning & Hygiene: Remove uneaten insect parts within 24–48 hours to prevent mold and bacteria in the arena or nest chambers.
