House Cricket (Acheta domesticus)
Popular and highly accepted feeder insect across most ant species. Available in a range of sizes, making it easy to match prey size to colony size. Best offered freshly killed or pre-crushed for smaller species, as live crickets can injure ants or escape into the formicarium.
Feeding & Suitability Guide
Why ants need protein: Essential for larval growth, pupation, and egg production by the queen. Adult workers consume very little protein themselves; they carry it to the larvae.
Preparation & Safety: Pre-freeze feeder insects for at least 24–48 hours at -18°C or dip them in boiling water for 10–15 seconds to eliminate harmful mites and pathogens. Cut insects in half for young colonies to facilitate access.
Portioning & Hygiene: Remove uneaten insect parts within 24–48 hours to prevent mold and bacteria in the arena or nest chambers.
